Ratei cave

I can't stop getting amazed at how many things can one do in a single day.
For example, if the dawn catches you awake in Bucharest, the evening can find you in the same city, but enriched with an unbelievable cultural-spiritual-speleologic experience.
|
Get to Targoviste by car or minivan (check at Gara de Nord minivan station). The town is home to the former
princely court, nowadays a complex of monuments that pays off a visit. Chindiei tower especially offers
beautiful views over the complex.
Also, don't miss the Dealu monastery, which, like a citadel, towers the valley from its beautiful green hill.
And if you plan to stay in the region longer than a day, pay a visit to the nearby Viforata monastery, also
beautifully located among the hills.

From Targoviste continue your trip towards Sinaia and after Fieni, make sure to take the left turn towards
Ratei cave. Getting there is tricky, since there are no signs leading to the cave, but for the moment, I leave
you the pleasure to discover it.
Off the beaten track, Ratei cave is located in a less explored region of the Bucegi mountains.
Though not a particularly interesting cave, it gives you the opportunity to feel like an explorer, as
you can visit it without a guide. Make sure you have the right equipment and get a map of the cave in advance
(ask some speleology club). You are almost guaranteed not to meet other tourists.

A few hours spent in the cave is a very rewarding experience. The same evening you can be back in Bucharest or,
if you prefer, you could camp in the cave's neighborhood.
