If you think you've explored enough of the Romanian Black Sea coast, but you've never
been to the south of Mangalia, then you should review your geography knowledge. Because Vama Veche, a pleasant village on the shore bordering Bulgaria, is only a few kilometers away from the touristic resorts, but, from other points of view, a world apart.
When you arrive in Vama Veche, you are struck by the countryside appearence of this place. A few houses with green gardens spotted with colorful flowers, stretching the main road for about 500 meters, a beautiful stone church, specific for the region and that's about it.
And, of course, there is the beach. Cosy, relaxed, spotted with picturesque bars and small restaurants, it invites you to enjoy it. From dusk to dawn, the few teraces play classic rock and everybody is dancing here, on the beach.
As for the food served in Vama Veche, I only have three words: tasty, large, cheap !
And there is also the wildness of this place. Fields of sunflowers and green slopes enchant the view from the
main road.
The inventivity of the locals is awesome. All the bars and restaurants have funny names and sometimes this holds
also for the products they sell. For example, what do you think about a "perverse crow" ? No, it's not what you think, it's just a harmless pancake.
There is even a library on the beach, in a wooden hut covered with reed. Actually, this seems to be the
architectural pattern of most of the buildings here. And, since we are talking about culture, we should
mention the almost daily concerts which take place here (you guessed, on the beach), culminating with
the so-called StufStock. This one got its name from the reed (Romanian: stuf) and from its bigger brother -
Woodstock festival. If you are here around end of August, don't miss it !
Come and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this place ! Join the relaxed mood of the people,
dance at night on the soft sand, take a dip in the Black Sea, drink a Sangria at a local pub,
listen to some good old music. The party is yours !
